State Farm Cuts Homeowners Insurance Rates by $230 Million After Prodding by FTCR
The largest homeowners insurer in the nation has agreed to reduce its California rates by 20%, about $266 million, after FTCR challenged an initial plan to cut prices by 10.6%. Under the consumer protection rules of Proposition 103, FTCR has saved policyholders more than $800 million since 2003.
While State Farm joined Farmers, Safeco, USAA, Hartford, Nationwide and Kemper, in lowering rates, Allstate continues to push for unwarranted rate hikes. FTCR has challenged Allstate's increase, and the Department of Insurance has agreed to not only look at lowering Allstate's rates, but also forcing the insurance giant to issue refunds for past gouging.
In related news, FTCR joined with insurance reformers around the nation this week to release a report prepared by the Consumer Federation of America that found insurance companies earned record profits of about $60 billion in America last year through a combination of overcharging customers, reducing coverage and underpaying legitimate claims. Download the report from ConsumerWatchdog.org.
