7 million Californians and 45 million Americans are already uninsured because of health insurer greed. Millions more are on the brink of losing coverage.

HMOs, PPOs and other health insurers are wasting billions of our health care dollars each year. They spend 20% on overhead including profit while public programs like spend just 2%.

A new California Health Plan open to all Californians, like that embodied in SB 840, will leverage the state's buying power and focus on preventing disease. Only by insuring everyone in a publicly accountable health care system can we provide higher quality, affordable health care.

The California program could be a model for other states and the nation.
